Dating in itself has its share of challenges, but dating for deaf-blind individuals is more challenging. For people with disabilities, dating can be difficult. It can be downright frustrating, especially if a deaf or blind person is dating someone who isn’t disabled. While the differences between people can make things problematic, it doesn’t mean that dating always leads to disappointment. There are also times when it has a very rewarding relationship in store for the people involved.
The main challenge of deaf-blind dating relies in communication. When deaf couples or blind couples are dating, communicating is easier. However, when a deaf-blind person goes out on a date with someone who doesn’t have the same disability, communication is more complicated. If you are dating a deaf or blind person, don’t expect communication to be smooth sailing all the time. What you can do is try many different kinds of ways to communicate with each other. See what works best for both of you and start from there.
It is important to remember that people who are in a relationship with deaf-blind individuals shouldn’t treat them differently from everybody else. Sure, they have their disabilities, but they are not inferior to those without them. People without disabilities have this belief that disabled individuals are dependent. In reality though, most of them are self-sufficient and can do everything for themselves. This is the reason why deaf-blind folks are offended when they are given special treatment. Even if you mean it as a nice gesture, they could be insulted if it makes them appear helpless. Hence, when dating a deaf-blind person, make sure to inform them that you mean well if you do something for them.
Deaf-blind folks aren’t lesser individuals because of their disabilities. They also have much to offer in a relationship, just like those people who don’t share their burden. If you have met your love match in a deaf or blind person, don’t forget to inspire him/her with confidence. Deaf-blind people surely have insecurities, and it wouldn’t hurt to help them in that case. Dating deaf-blind individuals can be done with ease if you know what to do.
