teen online dating Safety Reminders for Teen Online Dating

When it comes to teen online dating, teens should take necessary precautions. The realm of online dating can be just as fun as it is dangerous, specially to teenagers. Adults who are involved in grownup dating sites know the dangers of meeting people through cyberspace, so teens should follow suit and make themselves safe in such situation. To all teens, here are some safety reminders for teen online dating:

  • Don’t believe everything you read – Not everybody involved in teen online dating is telling the truth. In fact, some aren’t even teens at all! There are adults who visit these sites posing as teens for money, sex or other reasons.

  • Don’t give out personal information – This is a general rule in online dating, regardless if you are a teen or not. If you have met someone online that you felt connected to and wants to meet him or her in person, let your parents know. Before you meet that person from teen online dating, ask them if it is safe to do so. If you’re hesitant to ask your parents, approach another adult that you trust.

  • Never go alone when meeting someone in person – If you decide to meet your teen online dating buddy in person, don’t go alone. For your own safety, have a trusted friend or parent nearby.

  • Don’t give in too quicklyTeen online dating (or online dating in general) gives the illusion that we already know what the person on the other line is really like. Online correspondence is never enough, though; you will only truly know a person when you meet him or her in real life.

  • Refrain from having sex - In real life, you usually get to know a person first before you kiss them right? Apply that same principle with teen online dating. You will never know if people online are telling you the truth about sexually transmitted diseases and birth control, so it would be better to avoid sex.

Teen online dating is okay, as long as you keep yourself safe. However, it would be better to leave cyberspace for awhile and meet fellow teens the traditional way. As a teenager, you should spend your time socializing and going on non-virtual dates. Teen online dating may have perks, but real-life interaction is still the one to beat.
